One of the most anticipated events of the year is coming up soon:
The Genoa Candy Dance & Faire
The dates for the 93rd Annual Candy Dance Faire are Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The first “candy dance” took place in 1919, back when Nevada’s first settlement was was securing its roots. The event was originally more of a fundraiser than a faire, suggested by the town judge’s daughter. The intent to help raise money to buy streetlamps for Genoa and the idea was to spend the day making candy to pass out to guests during an evening dance. If a hosted dance with sweets to go around wasn’t enough of an incentive for folks to come and support their community, the event featured a midnight supper as well. The judge and his daughter did end up raising enough money to purchase streetlights for the town, however, the candy dance continued to take place year after year in order to pay for the electricity to power those lamps.
Now, 93 years later, his fun festival celebrates Genoa’s history and Nevada’s admission to the United States. It takes place during the last full weekend in September near many quality affordable residential real estate properties at the Genoa Town Park Complex. The event boasts over 300 craft food and drink vendors, more than 90 artists and craft vendors, live music, family activities, an annual BBQ dinner and, of course, dancing.
